MISSION
Free the Sea offers a unique educational experience for youth by providing awareness on plastic pollution in the oceans and encouraging action.
Challenge / Threat
- Studies estimate there are now 15-51 trillion pieces of plastic in the world’s oceans weighing up to 269,000 tons. At current rates, plastic is expected to outweigh all the fish in the sea by 2050.
- We are producing over 380 million tons of plastic every year, and some reports indicate that up to 50% of that is for single-use purposes
- An estimated 300 million plastic bags every year end up in the Atlantic Ocean alone.
- 100 million marine animals die each year from plastic waste alone- these are just the creatures found!
TAKE ACTION
The time is NOW! there are many ways to help make our beaches clean and safe once again.
There are many ways for you to take action now. You can donate money or your time to a myriad of worthy charities and not-for-profit entities that do great things for our seas and beaches. You can get involved with or even create clubs in your schools to get others involved in this great cause. You can also write or call your city or state officials to encourage them to pass legislation or take other steps to help prevent further polluting of the oceans and beaches.
how to startOUR BOARD OF DIRECTORS
Hi! My name is Isabella and I am the founder of Free the Sea. I grew up in Hermosa Beach and spent 6 summers participating in the Junior Lifeguard program. This was how I first became aware of the challenges facing our ocean. Since then I have continued to learn more and have felt compelled to help build awareness on the issues facing the ocean, especially the accumulation of plastic pollution.
In July 2022, I started the process to create this website and am now very proud of the work my team and I have been able to accomplish. Thank you all for making this possible.
